An Indian National Center for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) in Hyderabad plans to increase its use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools to improve ocean advisory services.
As part of the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), INCOIS provides information and advisory services on potential fishing zones, tsunami early warnings, and advisory services related to algal blooms, storm surges, and coral bleaching in the Indian Ocean, including the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea.
Earlier this month, Spotflock Technologies Private Limited, an organization that specializes in deep technology in Telangana, signed an MoU with the Hyderabad-based institution.
As part of the collaboration, the partners will examine the possibility of pooling their capabilities and resources for developing a collaborative framework and deep technology applications in ocean science and services.
Spotflock CEO Sridhar Seshadri said: “We will work closely with INCOIS to develop AI-driven early warning systems so that environmental pollution can be contained more quickly.”
Technological interventions will be used primarily to classify fish species and track their movement along the Indian Ocean, identify fishing zones and provide relevant information, study the effects of climate change on species populations, track migration routes, and detect ocean pollution, officials said.
In addition to estimating seafloor depth and predicting wave conditions, AI-ML technologies will be applied to the estimation of seafloor depth.
