Arun Goel, a retired IAS officer from the Punjab cadre, was appointed an Election Commissioner on Saturday by President Droupadi Murmu.
It is with great pleasure that the President appoints Shri Arun Goel, Indian Administrative Service (Retd.) (PB: 1985) as the Election Commissioner in the Election Commission with effect from the day he assumes this office,” the Union Law and Justice Ministry announced.
Since May 15, when former Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar was appointed Chief Election Commissioner after Sushil Chandra retired, there has been a vacancy in the three-member commission.
According to an order of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, Goel took voluntary retirement from his position as Secretary Ministry of Heavy Industries on Friday. He was succeeded by Uttar Pradesh cadre officer Kamran Rizvi.
It was initially anticipated that Goel would retire on December 31.
