Agriculture Ministry predicts a 6% drop in kharif rice production

The Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare announced on Wednesday the initial Proposals for the Production of the major Kharif crops in 2022-23. The report estimated kharif rice output as 104.99 million tonnes in this season as a result of a monsoon that was uneven, which is 6 percent lower than the output of 111.76 million tonnes during the last season.
The estimates of kharif rice production are lower than the production target of 112mt that was set for this season as well as the 105.21mt number for 2020-21.
The decline in kharif production is significant, in light of the requirement for rice consumption under the National Food Security Act 2013.
In a statement, the Minister stated, “Total production of kharif rice for 2022-23 was estimated to be 104.99 millions tonnes. This is more than 4.40 millions tonnes than five previous seasons’ (2016-17 through 2020-21) typical Kharif the rice output of 100.59 Million tonnes.”
The statement stated that total foodgrain production during the kharif season is expected to be 149.92 million tonnes this is less than the goal of 163.15mt for the 2022-23 kharif and also the production of 156.04mt in the previous season of kharif (2021). In 2021 the total foodgrain kharif production was 150.58 millimetric tonnes.
“As per First Advance Estimates for 2022-23 (Kharif Only), total foodgrain production in the country is estimated at 149.92 million tonnes which is higher by 6.98 million tonnes than the average foodgrain production of previous five years’ (2016-17 to 2020-21),” the statement reads.
“Production of Maize in the country during 2022-23 is estimated at record 23.10 million tonnes which is higher by 3.21 million tonnes than the average Maize production of 19.89 million tonnes,” it added.
The statement added “Production of Kharif the coarse and nutrient cereals is estimated to be 36.56 million tonnes, which is greater by 2.92 millions tonnes than typical amount which is 33.64 millions tonnes. The total production of kharif pulses during 2022-23 is estimated to be 8.37 millions tonnes.”
“Total kharif oilseeds production in the country during 2022-23 is estimated at 23.57 million tonnes which is higher by 1.74 million tonnes than the average oilseeds production,” it stated.
“Total sugarcane production in the nation during 2022-23 is estimated to be record-breaking 465.05 millions tonnes. The sugarcane production during 2022-23 is more 91.59 million tonnes . This is more than the sugarcane average yield which is 373.46 millions tonnes” according to the announcement adding that amount of cotton produced is estimated to be 34.19 millions bales (of 170 kg each) and that the production of Jute & Mesta is estimated at 10.09 million bales (of 180 kg each).
“The estimated production of various crops (Kharif only) as per the First Advance Estimates for 2022-23 vis-a-vis the comparative estimates for the years 2008-09 onwards is enclosed,” it stated.
Commenting on the Initial Advanced Estimates of the Production of important Kharif crops the Secretary of the Union for Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar stated that the agriculture is growing each day thanks to “hard work” of farmers skilled scientists, their ability to work in a team as well as “farmer friendly” policies of the government.
