All Opposition parties are paying attention to BJP President JP Nadda’s rally today at Ramlila Maidan as speculation mounts that Delhi municipal elections will be held in December.
Over one lakh BJP workers are expected to attend the Panch Parmeshwar Sammelan. Adesh Gupta, Delhi BJP president, stated that there would be five booth workers from each of the 13,000 booths in the city attending the event. It was the responsibility of the councillors and Mandal presidents to select those who would be attending the rally.
As the BJP has controlled the MCD of Delhi for three consecutive terms, anti-incumbency is high, even as the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is close behind. As the Centre wanted to unify the MCDs from three to one and conduct delimitation, the MCD elections, initially scheduled for April, were postponed hours before the election schedule was to be announced.
According to officials, the delimitation of municipal wards is likely to be completed by the end of this month, after which the Union Home Ministry can issue a notification for the election.
In response to a request from the state election commission, an additional deputy commissioner of the MCD election office has issued an order dated October 13 to all heads of departments and zonal deputy commissioners. According to the official communication, the state election commission has begun preparations for the MCD elections, which are likely to occur in 2022 or 2023.
