Asian Academy Creative Awards: Basil Joseph wins top honor: ‘You’re only as good as your team’

At the Asian Academy Creative Awards, actor-filmmaker Basil Joseph won Best Director (Fiction). On Thursday, the Chijmes Hall in Singapore hosted an award ceremony to recognize the best content from 16 APAC countries. There’s been a gap of two years since AACA handed out awards in person.

The award went to Basil for directing Minnal Murali. In the past, there have been tons of superhero stories, and putting one together with a new story and vision was challenging to say the least. Having the Asian Academy Creative Awards recognize and praise my work shows just how successful I’ve been,” Basil said.

It has been a joyride to work with such incredible actors, producers, writers and Netflix, who all supported my vision and brought it to life. Having worked with such a beautiful team made all the difference,” the filmmaker-actor said.

With Tovino Thomas in the lead role, Minnal Murali tells the story of two social pariahs who end up gaining superpowers after being struck by the same lighting. There’s one who has a hero’s legacy to live up to, and there’s one who uses it to hurt people. It got rave reviews for the way Basil juxtaposed the hero and the villain, highlighting the dangers of society’s collective apathy.

Despite being originally intended for a theatrical release, Minnal Murali was ultimately released on Netflix in 2021 due to the Covid lockdown. In addition to Tovino Thomas, Guru Somasundaram, Aju Varghese, and Shelly Kishore also starred.
