Bill granting ST status to the Betta-Karuba people in Karnataka is passed by Parliament.

Thursday, the RAJYA SABHA approved a bill to add the Betta-Kuruba clan to the list of Scheduled Tribes in Karnataka. The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Fourth Amendment) Bill of 2022 approved by voice vote.
On December 19, the Lok Sabha cleared the bill that Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda had introduced in the Upper House.
The minister stated that the Bill intends to deliver justice to the Betta-Kuruba community of Karnataka, which consists of approximately 5,000 people in the southern state. “The state government of Karnataka has sought to include Betta-Kuruba as a synonym of Kadu-Kuruba in entry 16 of the list of Scheduled Tribes of Karnataka,” Munda stated in the Bill’s declaration of aims and purposes.
In response to the concerns made by members of the opposition, Munda stated that the Congress has done nothing for the welfare of the tribal community and is now pouring fake tears. Munda stated that the Narendra Modi administration is attempting to provide justice to all segments of society. “Once the Bill is adopted by Parliament, and the guidelines are drafted, the Betta-Kuruba group would be eligible for all the privileges offered to Scheduled Tribes, including reservations in educational institutions and government positions,” he added.
