Chhath Puja should be allowed on the banks of the Yamuna, according to BJP MP Manoj Tiwari

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Northeast Delhi Manoj Tiwari requested that Chhath Puja Samitis hold meetings on the banks of the river following meetings at his residence on Saturday.

During the festival, Tiwari said the river banks are being cleaned and nothing harmful is being immersed in the water.

It is milk, cow milk, or Gangajal that we pour into the river. It is believed that adding cow milk to water reduces the percentage of impurities in it, according to Tiwari.

Chhath is not permitted on the river bank because it hides the condition of the river from the people. This year, the Chhath festival will be celebrated on October 30 and 31 in Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand.

MP Arvind Kejriwal convened the samiti meeting on the same day that he announced the AAP-led Delhi government had allocated Rs 25 crore for the Chhath Puja celebrations across 1,100 locations.

As a result of Covid and the lockdown, people have not been able to celebrate any festivities for the past two years. As things are beginning to return to normal, the government has planned a large-scale celebration for Chhath Puja this year. Chhath Puja celebrations were held on a small scale before our government was formed,” the Chief Minister had stated.

The NGT issued an order in 2015 that stated: “We hereby prohibit anyone from throwing pooja material or any other material into the River Yamuna, except on the designated sites.” Those who disobey this order will be liable to pay compensation of Rs. 5,000/- in accordance with the ‘Polluter Pays’ principle.”

Purvanchalis, who constitute over 30% of the city’s population, celebrate Chhath Puja in connection with politics in the capital.

Based on a survey earlier by the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, Eastern UP and Bihar are believed to be the majority in 16 of 70 Assembly seats in the capital. As a means of wooing voters, both the Delhi government led by the AAP and the BJP’s MCD have spent large sums on preparations for Chhath Ghat.
