Congress’s regular session starts today; the Gandhis might miss a crucial meeting: 10 points

The Congress 85th Plenary Session will begin on Friday in the capital of Chhattisgarh with a meeting of the party’s steering committee during which the crucial decision to hold CWC elections would be taken. This is the day after Pawan Khera was detained on his way to Raipur and granted bail in connection with a FIR over alleged remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The 85th Congress’s main points are listed below:

1. During the three-day meeting, the Congress is anticipated to make significant choices that would establish a clear path until the Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

2. It is anticipated that it would finalise its plan for forming electoral alliances with opposition parties to the BJP.

3. The top officials of the Congress will be present in the plenary session, which will primarily support Mallikarjun Kharge’s presidency and clear the way for the establishment of a new working committee under his direction. Yet, it’s likely that Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi won’t attend the meeting on Friday.

4. Over 15,000 delegates will attend the session, which takes place against the backdrop of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which the party has hailed as a success.

5. The steering committee, which is acting in the capacity of the Working Committee (the previous one was disbanded until a new CWC was constituted), will convene at 10 am on the first day of the three-day session and decide whether or not there will be elections to the top decision-making body.

6. Communications-related general secretary of the Congress, Jairam Ramesh, stated that the steering committee will decide whether or not elections for the CWC seats will be held.

7. On Friday, the steering committee will meet at 10 a.m., followed by a meeting of the topics committee at 4 p.m., when six resolutions will be discussed.

8. On February 26, there will be a public meeting at 4 p.m. and a speech by the president of the House at 2 p.m.

9. Congress leader Pawan Khera was deplaned from an aircraft to Raipur on Thursday, sparking a day of high drama that started with his party leaders protesting on the tarmac. The plenary session was held the next day, on Friday.

10. Khera was granted on temporary bail until February 28 by a Delhi court later in the evening on the Supreme Court’s instructions after making headlines this week for ostensibly forgetting the name of the prime minister’s father during a news conference.
