Cyclone Sitrang, formed in the Bay of Bengal, will turn into a ‘severe’ cyclone tomorrow

On Sunday, the system intensified into two phases over the Bay of Bengal – before the prevailing depression into a deep depression (wind speed 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph) and later into a cyclone. At 5.30 pm on Sunday, Cyclone Sitarang was located 730 km northwest of Port Blair, 580 km south of Sagar Island in West Bengal and 740 km south-southwest of Barisal in Bangladesh.

“The cyclone will intensify into a ‘severe’ cyclone by Monday morning. It will continue to move northwestwards and cross the Bangladesh coast between Tinakona Island and sandwiched close to Barisal around the morning of October 25,” the IMD’s bulletin related to the storm said.

Coastal Odisha and West Bengal will experience strong wind and heavy rain, mainly on Monday and Tuesday.

IMD officials said heavy rains would occur over South Assam, East Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur and Tripura on Monday and Tuesday, while Northeast Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh would continue to receive rain on October 26.
