Gujarat Assembly Election News Highlights: The Gujarat Assembly elections will take place on December 1 and 5, and results will be announced on December 8. There are 182 seats in the Legislative Assembly, of which 89 will be contested in the first and 93 in the second phases. The number of eligible voters this year exceeds 4.9 crores. Over 51,000 polling stations will be set up, including more than 34,000 in rural areas.
Before announcing the schedule, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar expressed condolences to the victims of the Morbi bridge tragedy. As a result of the accident that killed at least 135 people, the poll schedule was delayed.
The term of the Gujarat Assembly expires on February 18, 2023. In conjunction with the announcement of the election schedule, the Model Code of Conduct is put into effect in the state. A total of 160 Central Armed Police Forces companies have been deployed in preparation for the elections.
As the nation awaits the much-awaited, high-stakes elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are engaged in a three-cornered contest. The BJP has been in power in the state – the home turf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi – for over two decades. As of 2017, the BJP won 99 seats, while the Congress won 77, winning 49.05 per cent and 42.97 per cent of the vote, respectively. During the past few years, the Congress’ tally has decreased to 62, while the BJP’s has increased to 111.
