President Droupadi Murmu presented Padma awards to former Karnataka chief minister S M Krishna, renowned industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, and renowned playback vocalist Suman Kalyanpur at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday.
In addition, the late billionaire stock market investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala and a number of unsung heroes were awarded the honour posthumously.
On the night of this year’s Republic Day, the president approved the conferral of 106 Padma awards, including three pair instances (in duo cases, the award is counted as one).
On Wednesday, nearly fifty individuals were awarded the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.
The Padma Vibhushan was presented to Krishna, who served as external affairs minister in the Congress-led UPA government and then joined the BJP.
Posthumously, renowned architect Balkrishna Doshi was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the country’s second-highest civilian honour.
Professor Kapil Kapoor of Delhi, whose publications on Indian grammatical ideas and models are well-known, spiritual leader Kamlesh D Patel, and the city of Kalyanpur were awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian honour.
Jhunjhunwala received the Padma Shri award.
There are three types of Padma awards: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. The Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, has not been bestowed to anyone since 2019.
The prizes are presented in numerous disciplines and spheres of activity, including art, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, commerce and industry, medical, literature and education, sports, and public service.
The Padma Vibhushan is given for exceptionally distinguished service, the Padma Bhushan for distinguished service of the highest rank, and the Padma Shri for distinguished service in any subject.
Since 2014, when it came to power for the first time, the Narendra Modi administration has bestowed Padma awards upon a number of unsung heroes who have contributed in various ways to society.
