Hazaribah: Pregnant woman mowed down as she tried to stop father’s tractor seizure

She was struck twice by employees of a finance company in Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh as she attempted to stop them from seizing her father’s tractor, police said.
According to the police, Mithilesh Kumar Mehta had taken out a loan in 2018 and was supposed to repay it over 44 installments of Rs 14,300 each. After the Covid-19 lockdown was imposed, Mehta was unable to make payments, according to the police.
“The farmer was unable to pay the next six installments, but the final settlement came to approximately Rs 1.2 lakh. As soon as the farmer attempted to settle the amount, the company demanded an additional Rs 10,000. So the farmer left without paying the amount… Later, however, it was agreed that the farmer would pay Rs 1.2 lakh by September 22.” However, the company’s employees went to his house to seize the tractor on September 15 (Thursday),” a police officer stated.
The police stated that when the employees of the finance company arrived at Mehta’s residence, they attempted to remove the “front end of the engine”.Mehta’s daughter, Monika Kumari, was two months pregnant at the time. She attempted to stop them.
The police stated that Mehta and Monika chased the employees.A farmer and his daughter confronted them at one point, and an argument ensued, resulting in the woman being mowed down twice by a vehicle and the accused escaping.She was rushed to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, where she was pronounced dead by doctors.
A murder FIR has been registered and the accused is being arrested, said Hazaribagh SP Manoj Ratan Chothe.
