We examine how India performed in the major global indices that were released in 2022 as the world prepares for the year’s close. Here is how the nation fared on several scales, such as happiness and world poverty:
Global Gender Gap Index: India was placed 135th out of 146 nations in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) recently released Global Gender Gap Index for 2022. India placed 140th out of 156 nations in 2021.
The Global Gender Gap Index measures gender parity in four important areas: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.
Global Hunger Index: India dropped from 101st to 107th place in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2022, which included 121 nations. The GHI, which is jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerlife, ranks nations according to their “severity.” Since 2000, the GHI has been released virtually yearly; this year’s report is the fifteenth.
Global Multidimensional Poverty Index: Between 2005–2006 and 2019–21, 415 million people in India rose out of poverty, with the prevalence of poverty dropping from 55% to just over 16%, according to the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index 2022. According to the MPI research released by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) at the University of Oxford, the majority of the world’s poor — 228.9 million — lived in India in 2020.
World Press Freedom Index: In its 2022 report, Reporters Without Borders’ World Press Freedom Index ranked 180 countries, placing India at 150. “Journalists are exposed to all types of physical assault, including police violence, ambushes by political activists, and lethal retaliation by criminal gangs or corrupt local authorities,” the report stated, calling India “one of the world’s most dangerous countries for the media.”
India continued to do poorly in the World Happiness Index, with its ranking just slightly improving to 136 from 139 last year. Only Afghanistan under the Taliban performed worse than India among the South Asian countries.
The World Happiness Report, released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network of the United Nations, assesses happiness levels by taking into account variables, including GDP, social support, personal freedom, and degrees of corruption in each country.
