In addition to creating Poo and Geet, Kareena Kapoor ensured people remember her for so much more than that

Kareena Kapoor has almost gained a cult following for her legendary portrayal of Poo in Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. We still remember her dialogues from the film twenty-two years after the film first aired because she is one of the few actors who can make extra look memorable, enough for the character to have its own fan base.

It is clear that she has a flair for playing loud and bratty rich characters, and unintentionally, she managed to bring some hilarity to those roles (Remember Khushi, Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon?). She was always remembered for her performance in the film, regardless of how badly it flopped.

Kareena recreated Poo and Geet from Jab We Met, another of her memorable songs. Nevertheless, Bebo was determined that she would not be merely regarded as a clone of Geet or Poo. Besides Tina, Poo, and Geet, she also portrayed a host of other characters in other films, ranging from a vengeful sex worker in Talaash to an empathic doctor in Kyun Ki. Upon stripping away the flamboyance and extra-ness, Kareena’s acting range would be revealed.

Kareena showed a different side of herself when she steered away from being categorized…

Omkara (2006)

The film was a modern retelling of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, set in the Indian heartland, and Kareena played the role of Dolly, the wife of Ajay Devgn’s hot-headed Omkara. There are no winners in this tale of blood and revenge, and Kareena’s portrayal of the Indian Desdemona remains poignant 14 years on.

Talaash (2012)

Aamir Khan and Rani Mukerji also appear in this film, in which Kareena plays a vengeful sex worker. Despite her quiet and deadly calm, she gave the audience chills at the trailer’s climax, where it was revealed that she was actually a ghost, trying to track down the man who had abandoned her.
