In his message to Mallikarjun Kharge, Prime Minister Modi wishes him a productive tenure as the President of the Congress

After Mallikarjun Kharge won the Congress presidential election by beating Shashi Tharoor in a closely contested contest, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated him on his new role as Congress leader.

“I wish Shri Mallikarjun Kharge Ji all the best in his new role as the President of @INCIndia. I wish him a fruitful tenure. In a tweet, Modi addressed Kharge.

As the first non-Gandhi chief of the Congress party in two and a half decades, the veteran leader won 7,897 of the valid votes of the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) delegates against Tharoor’s 1,072.

The Karnataka leader will officially become the party’s president on October 26. Rahul Gandhi stepped down after the 2019 Lok Sabha election debacle, and Kharge will replace her as interim Congress chief.

As the election process unfolded, BJP leader Rajyavardhan Rathore attacked the Congress, calling it a “fraud” and a “drama”.

A strong democracy requires strong opposition. It has been a long time since Congress has looked away from one family, yet it has still sought a rubber stamp. Rathore stated in a Hindi tweet that their internal election was nothing but fraud and drama.
