In SC tomorrow, a case challenging demonetisation is scheduled for hearing before a five-judge panel

The Constitution bench of the Supreme Court will hear a petition filed in 2016 challenging the Central government’s demonetisation decision on Wednesday.

The case will be heard by a bench consisting of Justice V Ramasubramanian, Justice BR Gavai, Justice Abdul Nazeer, Justice AS Bopanna, and Justice BV Nagarathna.

It was filed in 2016 in Supreme Court seeking quashing of the Narendra Modi government’s decision to demonetise Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes on the grounds that it impeded citizens’ rights to life and trade.

Vivek Narayan Sharma, a Delhi-based lawyer, has filed the lawsuit seeking to quash the notification or give citizens a “reasonable time frame” for exchanging demonetised currencies.

The plea has been listed as the first item on the bench’s agenda.
