In the World Weightlifting Championships, Bindyarani finishes in 25th place

In the women’s 59kg event, Commonwealth Games medalist S Bindyarani Devi finished 25th.

On Thursday, the Manipuri lifted 200kg (86kg + 114kg) in the 55kg event at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Based on her entry weight, Bindyarani competed in Group D. Group A includes the lifters with the highest entry weight, followed by Group B and so on.

In her first attempt at the snatch, the 23-year-old lifted 83 pounds and then lifted 86 pounds but failed to lift 88 pounds following her second attempt.

Also, she could not produce a “clean” lift, which means that she could not lift the barbell to her shoulders on her first clean-and-jerk attempt of 112kg. When Bindyarani attempted to lift the same weight a second time, she was able to perform a “clean” lift, but before she could “jerk” the weight overhead to arm’s length, she fell.

Nevertheless, the Commonwealth Championship gold medalist was soon up and walking after being examined by the doctors. After succeeding in her third clean and jerk lift of 114kg, Bindyarani displayed tremendous grit.

In the 49kg event on Tuesday, Indian lifter Mirabai Chanu won a silver medal.

The 2022 World Championships will serve as the first qualifying event for the 2024 Paris Olympics, where the number of weightlifting events will be reduced from 14 at the Tokyo Games to ten in Paris.

There is, however, no requirement to attend this event.

In order to qualify for the Olympics in 2024, a lifter must compete in both the 2023 World Championships and the 2024 World Cup. As well as the above requirements, the lifter must also participate in three of the following events – the 2022 World Championships, the 2023 Continental Championships, the 2023 Grand Prix 1, the 2023 Grand Prix II and the 2024 Continental Championships.

Upon completion of the qualification period, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) will publish each weight category’s Olympic Qualification Rating (OQR). The best three performances at the qualifying events will be considered to determine a weightlifter’s final rating.
