Milk supply likely to be hit as maldharis gear up to intensify protest

Milk distribution may be disrupted on Wednesday as maldhari (shepherd) organizations in Gujarat have decided to stop the supply till their demands, mainly the withdrawal of the Stray Animal Control Act.

A resolution to scrap the bill is expected to be tabled in the Gujarat Assembly on Wednesday.

We will stop milk supply from tomorrow (21 September, Wednesday) to everyone – be it individual customers or large milk dairies or companies – across Gujarat. Nagjibhai Desai, convener of Gujarat Maldhari Mahapanchayat said that this will continue till all our demands are met.

We want them to repeal the Animal Control Act which is taking over our Gauchar land; The authorities should stop taking cattle from our shelters and stop including villages within urban areas, Desai said, elaborating on some of the many demands put forth by Maldhari in the state.

The Odhav Maldhari Samaj said in a statement that it would not sell milk in protest, but would make pudding from their milk stock and distribute it to the people of the area for a day.
