Northeast monsoon arrives in South India, announces IMD

On Saturday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced the onset of the Northeast Monsoon over South India.

The typical onset of the northeast thunderstorm is October 21, with a standard divagation of five days.

The Meteorological Department has said widespread to moderate intensity rain, thunder and lightning are expected over Tamil Nadu, Karaikal and Puducherry until November 2. Kerala and Mahe will experience similar weather between Sunday and Tuesday.

IMD issued an ‘Orange’ alert in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. On Monday, a similar warning was sounded on Yanamonnd Rayalaseema and Andhra Pradesh coasts.

Also known as a downtime thunderstorm, the downfall from October to December affects Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Mahe, Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and South Interior Karnataka. It’s an essential season for Tamil Nadu, which receives about 48 per cent of its periodic downfall.
