‘One lakh student visa applications pending for Canada’: BJP MP flags delay in Lok Sabha

BJP Lok Sabha member Gopal Shetty on Tuesday appealed to the government to take up pending visa applications, especially of students, with embassies abroad.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Shetty said that many students, who had returned to India during the Covid pandemic and Ukraine war, were finding it difficult to obtain visas to study abroad.

“Many students have paid Rs 10-15 lakh as fees and are finding it difficult to get visas as many embassies are still closed. The problem is particularly severe with Canada where over one lakh visa applications are pending,” Shetty said.

He said cultural groups from Gujarat are finding it difficult to get visas to perform in the US.

Shetty, a member of Mumbai North, urged the government to take up the issue with the countries concerned and issue a clarification to this effect as the problem was with the embassies and not the Ministry of External Affairs.
