Hyderabad: A day after the suicide of a 26-year-old female postgraduate medical student at Kakatiya Medical College, Warangal, due to alleged harassment by her senior, her parents and student organisations sought a judicial investigation into the causes of her death.
The physician’s father, an assistant subinspector with South Central Railway’s Railway Protection Force, stated that there were numerous suspicions surrounding her death. “I believe there was a murder. Her senior may have administered the fatal medication that caused her death. He should receive a harsh sentence. I am unhappy with the Warangal police probe. We demand that an active high court judge investigate this murder,” he stated.
According to the physician’s father, she called him on February 20 and broke down over the alleged harassment by her superior. “She felt threatened by him after filing a complaint against him with the college administration,” he stated.
Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), who called for a bandh of all medical colleges in the state on Monday, mounted a protest at Kakatiya Medical College in Warangal, demanding action against the senior who was detained and placed in judicial detention for two weeks on Friday.
The senior physician was charged under Section 306 (attempt to commit suicide) of the Indian Criminal Code (IPC) as well as applicable portions of the Prohibition of Ragging Act and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The Telangana government declared on Monday an ex gratia payment of 30 lahks to the family of the dead physician. Additionally, the government has promised to grant a position in the panchayat raj department to a deceased family member. Errabelli Dayakar Rao, minister of state panchayat raj, stated that the government would provide all possible assistance to the victim’s family and take stern action against the culprits.
