Rahul Gandhi Arrives in Mizoram to Boost Congress Ahead of 2023 Elections

New Delhi, Oct 16 (ANI): Congress leader Rahul Gandhi arrived in Mizoram on Monday for a two-day visit ahead of the state assembly elections next year.

Gandhi was received at Lengpui airport by senior Congress leaders including state party president Lalsawta and former chief minister Lal Thanhawla. A large number of party workers also gathered to welcome Gandhi.

During his visit, Gandhi is expected to meet Congress leaders and workers to discuss poll strategies. He will also address a public rally in state capital Aizawl.

Mizoram is one of the few states where the Congress is still in power. The party has been ruling the state since 2008 under the leadership of chief minister Zoramthanga.

However, the Congress is facing a stiff challenge from the Mizo National Front (MNF) which ruled Mizoram for two consecutive terms from 1998 to 2008 under the leadership of Zoramthanga.

The BJP is also trying to make inroads in the Christian-dominated state for the first time by capitalising on its alliance with the MNF.

Elections to the 40-member Mizoram Legislative Assembly are expected to be held in November or December 2023. The Congress will be looking to retain power for a third consecutive term.
