Prior to the release of the results of the Congress presidential election, Rahul Gandhi inadvertently clarified that Mallikarjun Kharge was the new party chief. Asked about his new role within the party during a press conference in Andhra Pradesh, Gandhi replied, “I cannot comment on the role of Congress President, that must be addressed by Kharge ji (the party’s Presidential candidate). I will be assigned a specific role by the President.

By Wednesday evening, Kharge and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor will have decided who will serve as Congress president.
On the eve of the results, Tharoor had written to the party’s chief election authority, highlighting “extremely serious irregularities” in the conduct of the election in Uttar Pradesh and demanding the invalidation of all votes cast in the state.
Asked to respond to Tharoor’s allegations, Gandhi stated, “We are the only political party in the country that holds elections and has an election commission.” I have had the opportunity to work with Mistry Ji (CEC chairman of the Cong), and I have found him to be straightforward. It will be up to the EC to take a decision on the issues.”
