Swara Bhasker got engaged to politician Fahad Ahmad on February 16. This caused a huge debate on social media, and Islamic religious scholars questioned whether the marriage would be legal under Sharia law, since Swara Bhasker has not converted to Islam.

Swara and Fahad got married because of the Special Marriage Act, which lets Indian citizens of all faiths get married.

Yasir Nadeem al Wajidi, an Islamic scholar in Chicago, said that Swara Bhasker’s marriage is legal because they got married in court, but it is not valid according to Islamic law.

Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi Bareilvi, who is the head of the All India Muslim Jamaat, said that Swara Bhasker can’t marry Fahad unless she first converts to Islam.
