Shakira face s tax fraud trial in Spain

Colombian pop singer Shakira was approved for trial on tax fraud charges on Tuesday by a Spanish judge. The entertainer was accused by Spanish prosecutors in 2018 of failing to pay 14.5 million euros ($13.9 million) of taxes between 2012 and 2014. An investigation by Spanish prosecutors in 2018 revealed the entertainer failed to pay taxes on income earned between 2012 and 2014. Should she be convicted of tax evasion, prosecutors want her to spend eight years in prison and pay a substantial fine.

As well as rejecting a deal with authorities to avoid trial, Shakira, 45, has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. Shakira will be charged with six counts of tax fraud by the court in Esplugues de Llobregat near Barcelona. All her debts and interest of 3 million euros ($2.8 million) have already been paid.
