Tamil Nadu minister hits out at Guv over Raj Bhavan remark

After Tamil Nadu Raj Bhavan said that the murder of army member M. Prabhu is a “matter of serious concern,” the state’s higher education minister told Governor R. N. Ravi on Wednesday to stop hurting the dignity of the state.

In a photo that went viral on Wednesday, Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai is seen with a group of ex-servicemen giving a petition to Governor Ravi. “Some ex-servicemen met with the Governor and told him how upset they were that an armed group led by a DMK councillor killed a serving soldier, M. Prabhu, in a horrible way and that the state police didn’t do much about it. “It is, in fact, a very worrying situation,” the Raj Bhavan said in a late-night tweet from its verified page. But nothing was said about a meeting with leaders of the BJP.

In a three-page statement, Minister K. Ponmudi said that the Governor was turning the Raj Bhavan into a coffee shop by posting photos and details on social media about his meetings with “jobless people.”

The statement from the Raj Bhavan comes a week after the Krishnagiri district police said the murder had nothing to do with politics and was caused by a small argument between family members. In this case, police have arrested nine people, including R Chinnasamy, a councillor for the ruling party, and his son, a police constable in Chennai.

“The murder has nothing to do with politics, except that the person accused is a council member for the party in power,” Ponmudi said. “But the BJP has made patriotism something that can be sold politically. They are using the incident to get attention from the media. The party set up a protest and got an ex-soldier to talk about how law and order in the state might get worse.

This is the latest round of the Governor and the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government’s war of words, which has been going on for more than a year over many different issues. “The Raj Bhavan tweets about a letter that a political party gave to the Governor” (BJP). When will they give more information about the bill passed by the Tamil Nadu Assembly that bans online gambling? Ponmudi asked. “What will the Raj Bhavan say about the other laws that need the Governor’s approval? …the governor shouldn’t make statements on social media like other politicians do. Instead, he should do the work that is expected of him. Only then will the salary he gets from taxpayers be worth it.

The BJP group in Tamil Nadu held a protest against the DMK government in Chennai on Tuesday morning. In the evening, they held a candlelight vigil for Lance Naik Prabhu, who had died. Ex-servicemen also went to the protest, and one of them, B B Pandian, warned the Tamil Nadu government not to force army people like him to fight back. Pandian used to be in charge of the BJP’s branch for ex-servicemen in Tamil Nadu. “The people here who used to be in the military are experts at bombs, guns, and war. We’re not going to do anything. “But don’t make us angry,” Pandian said on Tuesday. This has caused a stir on social media. A police official said that on Wednesday, Triplicane Police in Chennai arrested Pandian under sections 153 (provoking with the intent to start a riot), 505 1 (b) (trying to scare or alarm the public in a way that could lead someone to commit a crime against the State or against public peace), and 506 I (criminal intimidation).

Annamalai said that he would give Prabhu’s family a 10 lakh compensation. He recently said that M K Stalin, the chief minister, should have said something about the crime. The BJP says that the murder shows how disrespectful the DMK is to the Indian Army.

But after nine people were arrested last week, the superintendent of police for the Krishnagiri district, P. Saroj Kumar Thakur, said that the dead man, Prabhu, was the grandson of the accused DMK councillor’s brother. He had said that it wasn’t a planned murder, but that on February 8, an argument about Prabhu’s sister-in-law washing clothes with potable water led to a crime. The DMK council member and his family attacked Prabhu and his brother the same night. His brother lived, but Prabhu died from the head injuries he got in the attack. On February 14, he died in a private hospital in Hosur.
