The fast breeder reactor at Kalpakkam is nearly finished, says the minister

Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh said on Thursday that a Fast Breeder Reactor prototype at Kalpakkam nuclear power plant in Tamil Nadu is “nearly complete.”

An FBR is a kind of nuclear reactor that generates more atomic fuel than it consumes.

Asked about the reactor during Question Hour by Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi, Singh said the MoS told Parliament during the last Winter Session that the reactor would be finished in October 2022.

“Kalpakkam is one of the oldest reactors in the world. It’s all indigenous and we have four units. It’s nearing completion, and many of the units have only been functional for about eight-and-a-half years,” he said.
