The government has extended the deadline for integrating Aadhaar and voter ID until March 31, 2024.

The deadline for voluntary linkage of Aadhaar and Voter ID has been extended from April1, 2018 to March 31, 2024, according to a notice issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on Tuesday.

On June 17, 2022, the Ministry announced April 1, 2023, as the “date on or before which every person whose name is on the electoral roll may intimate his Aadhaar number in accordance with the abovementioned clause.” The notification on Tuesday changed the date to “March 31, 2024.”

The Election Commission began a campaign on August 1, 2022, to collect voters’ Aadhaar numbers in a voluntary drive, as authorised by the Election Laws (Amendment) Act 2021.

In a Right to Information response to The Indian Express on December 15, 2022, the EC stated that it had received 54.32 crore Aadhaar numbers as of December 12 but that the process of linking with Voter IDs had not yet begun. According to the EC, there were 95 crore registered voters in the country as of January 1.
