A total of 13 medallions of excellence were awarded to India at the WorldSkills Competition 2022 (WSC 2022), placing 11th overall with two silver medals, three bronze medals, and two gold medals. WorldSkills Competition is a global hunt known for raising the profile and recognition of skilled people.
The competition was conducted this year in a decentralised mode from September 3 till November 28 across Europe, North America and East Asia. In India, candidates are selected by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) through IndiaSkills Competition.
This year, the competition witnessed overwhelming participation from India in 50 skills, with over 56 competitors, 50 experts, 11 interpreters and seven team leaders displaying their talents across industries, such as hotel receptionist, mechatronics, bakery, web technologies and more. The participation ranged across 50 skills, with six skills comprising a team of two competitors. Among the 56 competitors, 11 were women, and 12 candidates were qualified from Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).
It is noteworthy that India performed much better than it did the last time the competition was held in 2019. India had placed 13th in the competition the previous year.
Among the winners, Nandita Saxena won the first silver medal for women in the hospitality sector in the patisserie and confectionery trade. A bronze medal was awarded to Anushree Srinivasan in the category of the hotel reception. In addition, India was awarded two Medallions of Excellence, with Charmi Sen receiving recognition in the field of hairdressing and Saraswathy PV receiving recognition in the field of health and social care. In the prototype modelling and mechatronics competitions, ITI-qualified competitors displayed outstanding performances, leading to the country winning two bronze medals and two Medallions of Excellence in the autobody repair and automobile technology categories.
Over six subject matter experts were awarded certificates of merit in prototype modelling, hairdressing, bricklaying, autobody repair, beauty therapy, and graphic design technology as part of the WorldSkills international competition.
