The Supreme Court dismisses Manish Sisodia’s libel case against Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Bar and Bench reported that the Supreme Court rejected Manish Sisodia’s plea seeking dismissal of the defamation proceedings brought by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma against him.
According to Sarma, his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, had allegedly given contracts to Sisodia for personal protective equipment (PPE) kits at above-market rates.

Assam’s government bought PPE kits for Rs 600 each from other companies, but Sarma gave urgent supply orders to his wife and son’s companies for Rs 990 each, according to Sisodia.
The opposition Congress has also demanded a CBI probe into the alleged corruption, CPI, CPI(M), CPI(ML)-Liberation, RCPI, TMC, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad and Anchalik Gana Morcha.
On June 1, this year, digital media organizations – New Delhi-based ‘The Wire’ and Guwahati-based ‘The Crosscurrent’ – had, in a joint investigation claimed that the Assam government had placed four Covid-19-related emergency medical supply orders, probably without following proper procedures.
