The Supreme Court decided on Monday to hear a petition filed by former Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy asking the Centre to declare the Ram Sethu a national historic monument.
A bench comprising of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, judges P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala, took note of the comments of the BJP representative who raised the topic, stating that the government has yet to make a decision.
Swamy claimed that the Centre had been dragging its feet on the issue for more than nine years.
“We will list it as soon as possible,” the bench replied.
On January 19, the Centre informed the Supreme Court that it was investigating the possibility of designating the Ram Sethu as a national cultural monument.
The Supreme Court had asked the BJP leader if he wanted to make a representation to the government.
The court also ordered the Centre to rule on the matter and granted Swamy the right to appeal if he was dissatisfied, dismissing his interim application on the subject.
Ram Sethu, also known as Adam’s Bridge, is a line of limestone shoals that connects Pamban Island off the south-eastern coast of Tamil Nadu to Mannar Island off the northwestern coast of Sri Lanka.
