The Supreme Court will hear a bundle of petitions concerning the criminalization of marital rape on May 9.

Wednesday, the Supreme Court scheduled a comprehensive hearing on a group of petitions concerning the criminalization of spousal rape for May 9. Indira Jaising, a senior attorney, raised the issue before a bench presided over by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.

She informed the court that the case’s order of arguments and common compilation was complete.

Tushar Mehta, the Solicitor General, stated that the Centre’s response is ready and must be reviewed.

“List this on May 9, 2023,” stated the bench.

The apex court requested a response from the government on a group of petitions concerning the criminalization of spousal rape on January 16.

One of the appeals was filed in response to the Delhi High Court’s divided decision on the matter. Khushboo Saifi, one of the petitioners before the Delhi High Court, has filed this appeal.

On May 11, 2012, the Delhi High Court rendered a divided decision on the subject.
