The worst message of parliamentary democracy is uncontested budget approval. P Chidambaram

On Friday, P Chidambaram, a senior Congress politician and former finance minister, stated that uncontested budget passage is the “worst message” from parliamentary democracy.

His statements came a day after the Lok Sabha unanimously adopted the Union Budget proposing expenditures of over Rs 45 lakh crore for the fiscal year beginning April 1.

“The worst message a parliamentary democracy can send is to pass a budget without debate,” Chidambaram tweeted.

“In 2023-24, Rs 45,03,097 crore will be raised and spent for the ‘people’ without input from the people’s representatives,” he claimed.

After two adjournments, the Lower House of Parliament resumed consideration of the Demands for Grants and Appropriation Bills as the ruling and opposition MPs continued their verbal duel over their respective demands for an apology from Rahul Gandhi for his remarks in the United Kingdom and a joint parliamentary committee investigation into the Adani issue.

The majority of the second leg of the Budget Session was cancelled owing to protests from both sides, and it was one of the few times that the Budget was enacted without debate.
