There is no local support, Agnipath rallies may be suspended or shifted to other states: Army to Punjab

According to the Army’s zonal recruitment officer in Jalandhar, the local civil administration has expressed a “vacillating” attitude toward recruitment rallies. Under the short-term Agnipath scheme, he said the protests could either be “hampered” or moved to neighboring states.

The Zonal Recruitment Officer, Jalandhar, Major General Sharad Bikram Singh, wrote to V K Janjua, Punjab Chief Secretary, and Kumar Rahul, Principal Secretary for Employment Generation, Skill Development and Training, on September 8th. “Unfortunately, the civil administration has shown only sporadic support without any commitment from them. They often cite the Chandigarh government’s lack of funds or directions as the reason for their inadequacies.”

According to the letter, the civil administration must provide specific “inescapable requirements” for the recruitment rally to be held, such as police assistance to maintain law and order, security, crowd control, and essential barricading to allow candidates to enter in a controlled and smooth manner

A medical support, including an ambulance team and a medical officer, is also expected from the civil administration. Furthermore, the letter states that basic amenities need to be provided, such as rain shelters, water, mobile toilets, and food for 3,000 to 4,000 candidates per day during the 14-day rally.

Without a clear commitment to making these arrangements, it warns, “we would be taking up the case with the Army Headquarters to retain all future recruitment events and procedures in the state” or “alternatively conduct recruitment events in neighboring states

Recruiting rallies have been conducted in Ludhiana since August, while another camp will take place in Gurdaspur (September 1-14), and one in Patiala from September 17 to 30.

The chief secretary did not respond to phone calls or text messages sent to him regarding the recruitment rally that was held in Ludhiana in August, and there is another recruitment camp scheduled for Gurdaspur in September (September 1-14).

‘Nothing serious’ has arisen in Gurdaspur, says Principal Secretary for Employment Generation Kumar Rahul. I spoke with the General about some issues at Gurdaspur, but they are not serious. During the Patiala rally (September 17-30), everything is fine and all measures are in place to ensure a smooth operation.

According to Surabhi Malik, Deputy Commissioner, Ludhiana, the Army had not encountered any problems holding recruitment rallies there. The Army recruitment authorities have actually given us an appreciation certificate for conducting the Agniveer rally smoothly in August, according to Malik.

An information shared by the army with the state government indicates that an estimated 27,000 candidates will be participating in the recruitment rallies in Patiala – from rural and urban areas across Malerkotla, Fatehgarh Sahib, Mansa, Patiala, Sangrur and Barnala.
