Ramdev says more people got cancer after the COVID-19 pandemic, but experts say there is no link.

Saturday, yoga guru Ramdev said that the number of cancer cases in the country went up after the COVID-19 pandemic. However, medical experts said that there was no link between the two events and that the rise in cancer cases was a normal thing.

A well-known oncologist said that the rise of 5% per year in cancer cases has nothing to do with the pandemic.

Ramdev said this while talking to a crowd early in the morning at Miramar beach in Goa, where his Patanjali Yog Samiti had set up a yoga camp.

On the stage with him was Pramod Sawant, who is the Chief Minister of Goa.

“Cancer is getting worse. After the COVID-19 pandemic, there were more people getting this disease. He said, “People have lost their sight, their hearing, etc.”

But Dr. Shekhar Salkar, a well-known oncologist and former head of the Indian Medical Association’s Goa unit, said that as the world’s population grows, so does the number of cancer cases.

He said that the number of cases has gone up by 5% every year.

“The number of people with cancer won’t go down. But you can’t blame it on the COVID-19 pandemic either,” said Dr. Salkar, who is also the head of the Goa BJP’s medical cell.

He didn’t name Ramdev, but he said, “Celebrities should be careful about what they say because people believe what they say.” India has 104 cancer patients per 100,000 people. In 2018, there were 85 cancer patients per 100,000 people.

“But at the same time, we are a lot better than the United States, where the rate is over 500 patients per million,” he said.

He said that if we don’t change the way we live, India’s cancer rate could pass that of the US.

A surgical oncologist named Dr. Shredharan N also said that a 5% rise in the number of people with cancer is normal.

He said, “There is no evidence that cancer rates have gone up since the COVID-19 pandemic.”
