Ukraine war, component supply hitch slow down production in Railways factories

War in Ukraine and vendors failing to supply components have slowed the railways in meeting its annual production targets in the first four months of this fiscal year.
For the rest of the year, railway sources said several issues affecting production during the first quarter have been resolved and the target will be met by the end of this financial year.
Officials said the supply of forged wheels to LHB coaches could not be done in time due to the war in Ukraine. As a result, the Railways has produced 1,874 LHB coaches across its three production factories till August, against an annual target of 5,896 productions by March 31. “The rest will be completed by March as the issue of wheel supply is now resolved,” a railway official said to Indian Express.
In terms of locomotives, the railway factories produced 371 against an annual target of 1,140.
In terms of EMU/MEMU trains, which go into running short-distance passenger trains and local train units, the factories have made just 53, while the total annual target is 730.
In a periodic review meeting of production units, chaired by Railway Board Chairman and CEO VK Tripathi in July, the issue was highlighted and production units were asked to increase their production for the rest of the fiscal year.
