According to the civil aviation ministry, air passengers’ data is stored on their own devices under the DigiYatra process, and there is no centralised storage of information.
DigiYatra is a biometric boarding system that uses facial recognition technology to give travellers a smooth and hassle-free airport experience.
“With DigiYatra, travellers’ data is held on their own device rather than in centralised storage. There is no central storing of passengers’ Personally Identifiable Information (PII) data in the DigiYatra process. All of the passengers’ data is encrypted and saved in their smartphone wallets. Information is only shared between the traveller and the airport of origin, where the passenger’s DigiYatra ID must be authenticated,” according to the release.
According to the government, the data is also wiped from the airport’s system within 24 hours of the flight’s departure.
“Since the data is encrypted, it cannot be used by any other party,” it stated.
In the first phase, the DigiYatra service was launched at Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi airports.
