While You Were Sleeping: Man City defeats Tottenham 4-2, Krejcikova advances to the fourth round of the Australian Open, and Madrid defeats Villarreal in the Copa del Rey.

Pep Guardiola has publicly questioned Manchester City’s ability to win another Premier League title this season, despite trimming Arsenal’s lead to five points on Thursday. Manchester City has won four league titles in the last five seasons.

At the Etihad Stadium, the defending champion scored four goals in the second half to defeat Tottenham by a score of 4-2.

It was a performance that boosted the spirits of City supporters, who had jeered the club as it trailed 2-0 at the break. Guardiola interpreted this as evidence that his players may have lost their edge after achieving so much success.

After losing to Manchester United in the Manchester derby last weekend, City watched as Arsenal opened up an eight-point lead at the top of the rankings and risked losing even more ground when Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal gave Tottenham a strong first-half lead.

Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland, and Riyad Mahrez scored three goals for City in the 12 minutes following halftime.

Krejcikova is the first player to progress to the fourth round of the Australian Open.

Barbora Krejcikova is the first player to advance to the fourth round at this year’s Australian Open after defeating Anhelina Kalinina in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, in the tournament’s opening match on Rod Laver Arena on Friday.

The twenty-second-seeded Czech woman overpowered her opponent in the opening five games of the match. In three matches, Krejcikova has not lost a set.

Later on the fifth day, the third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas will have further incentive to advance, while the top-seeded Iga Swiatek and two prominent American ladies will also be in play.

Following the elimination of top-seeded and defending champion Rafael Nadal and No. 2 Casper Ruud, Tsitsipas is the highest-ranked player still in the men’s tournament.

In the second match on Rod Laver, the 24-year-old Tsitsipas faces Tallon Griekspoor for the first time. Tsitsipas is a three-time Australian Open semifinalist and the runner-up at the 2021 French Open to Novak Djokovic.

Madrid rallies past Villarreal in Copa

Real Madrid appeared to be on the verge of elimination from the Copa del Rey on Thursday, facing another painful setback only days after losing the Spanish Super Cup final to rival Barcelona in Saudi Arabia.

Madrid overcame a two-goal deficit in the first half to upset Villarreal 3-2 and go to the Copa quarterfinals for the second consecutive season.

Robert Lewandowski scored twice as Barcelona defeated Ceuta, a club from the third level, 5-0 earlier on Thursday.

In the 86th minute, Dani Ceballos scored the game-winning goal for Madrid in Villarreal with a shot from the edge of the penalty box. Éder Milito scored the equaliser in the 70th minute after he had assisted Vincius Jnior’s goal in the 57th minute.
