Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that Indian NGOs had received a total of Rs 55,449 crore in foreign donations in the last three years.
Rai stated that the NGOs received Rs 16,306.04 crore in the fiscal year 2019-20, Rs 17,058.64 crore in 2020-21, and Rs 22,085.10 crore in 2021-22.
He stated that NGOs in Delhi received the most foreign financing, totalling Rs 13,957.84 crore, followed by Tamil Nadu (Rs 6,803.72 crore), Karnataka (Rs 7,224.89 crore), and Maharashtra (Rs 5,555.37 crore).
The NGOs that accepted foreign funds were required to register under the Foreign Contribution Registration Act (FCRA). “In the last five years, the Centre has cancelled FCRA registration of 1,827 NGOs for violations of legislation,” he noted in a written response.
“As of March 10, the FCRA registration certificate of 16,383 Organizations is valid, out of which 14,966 Associations have submitted obligatory Annual Reports for Financial Year 2021-22 under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, 2010. There have been some accusations in the past about FCRA registered Associations misusing or diverting foreign funds. Such complaints are handled in accordance with the terms of the Act and the rules enacted thereunder,” he said.
