‘Tough stance’: RS Chairman Dhankhar’s meeting with ministries and Opposition leaders fails to resolve the stalemate in the House.

Even though Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar met with the floor leaders of various political parties prior to the opening of the session, the pre-lunch proceedings were adjourned 18 minutes after the House convened on Thursday morning.

Members from the ruling BJP and the Opposition benches continued to engage in an intense rhetorical fight over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘democracy in jeopardy’ remark in the United Kingdom and a demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee to investigate charges against the Adani Group.

The two sides have taken a “strict posture,” and the House is not sending a positive message to the public, Dhankhar stated before adjourning the session until 2:00 p.m. Earlier, Dhankhar denied 12 requests under Rule 267 to discuss the charges against Adani Group by setting aside the day’s proceedings.

As the Rajya Sabha reconvened after a two-day vacation, Chairman Dhankhar held a floor leader meeting to discuss and break the impasse between the BJP and the Opposition parties.

The discussion began at 10 a.m. in Dhankar’s chamber to discuss maintaining the Rajya Sabha’s orderly operation. According to reports, Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Pralhad Joshi, Arjun Ram Meghwal, and V Muraleedharan attended the meeting.

Prior to the meeting, Rajya Sabha LoP Mallikarjun Kharge stated, “I would be attending. We shall wait to hear what the Chairman (Jagdeep Dhankhar) has to say (during the meeting)”.

Prior to it, many leaders of opposition parties met separately at Kharge’s office in the House of Representatives.
