The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the National Logistics Policy, which aims to cut transportation charges and upgrade the global performance of the sector.

Launching the policy last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that “from 13-14 percent (of GDP), we should all aim to bring down logistics cost to single digits at the earliest”.

It seeks to improve India’s ranking in Logistics Performance Index from 44th in 2018 globally, and to create a data-driven decision support mechanism for an efficient logistics ecosystem, said an official statement. Briefing journalists about the policy, Information, and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur told that the government aims to set up India among the topmost 25 countries by 2030.

The Empowered Group of Secretaries (EGoS) framework under the Pradhan Mantri Gati Shakti National Master Plan will oversee the implementation of the policy.

A Service Improvement Group will similarly be set up to oversee the parameters of procedures and nonsupervisory and digital reforms in the logistics sector.

The policy perpetration will emphasize warehousing development, norms creation, digitization, and robotization in the logistics value chain. Important enterprises under the policy contain Unified Logistics Interface Platform( ULIP), Ease of Logistics Services Platform ande-Handbook on Warehousing.

Fourteen countries have formerly developed their separate logistics programs and for 13 countries, it’s in the line phase.
