Tensions are rising between India and Maldives after derogatory remarks were made against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by some Maldivian leaders. Now Bangladesh has come out in support of India, criticizing Maldives for the unacceptable comments.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen told ANI, “Making fun of Indian PM Narendra Modi is not tolerable. This shows the degradation of their values because people they are mocking are prominent leaders and should be respected, not made fun of.”
He added, “We condemn this. We don’t want any top leader to be insulted like this.” Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina also backed India, calling it a “trusted friend” that has “always supported us.”
The remarks against PM Modi have caused outrage in India. The opposition party in Maldives also slammed President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s government, demanding an apology to the people of India. MP Eva Abdulla said the comments were “shameful, racist and intolerable.”
The row has cast a shadow on the traditionally close ties between India and Maldives. India has been at the forefront of assisting Maldives during times of crisis.
As Maldives faces growing criticism from allies, the damage caused to bilateral relations by the undiplomatic remarks remains to be seen. India is yet to issue an official statement on the matter. But Bangladesh’s support indicates Maldives’ isolation over the controversy.
