AIADMK snaps ties with BJP-led NDA alliance ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha polls
The All India Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) on Monday said that the party has decided to “break all ties with the BJP-led NDA alliance” in Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
The move, the party said, is a protest against BJP’s attacks and defamatory statements on AIADMK and their leaders for over a year.
“The state leadership of the BJP has been continuously making unnecessary remarks on our former leaders, our general secretary EPS and our cadres for the past one year. In today’s meeting, this resolution was passed unanimously,” said the party.
“It has been unanimously decided that AIADMK will withdraw from the National Democratic Alliance from today, respecting the opinion and wishes of 2 crore volunteers,” AIADMK’s official page on X (formerly Twitter) stated.
Speaking to the media, AIADMK Spokesperson Sasirekha said that the resolution to break ties with the BJP-led NDA alliance was based on the party members’ opinion and that the party would “very happy to face” the upcoming Assembly and parliamentary elections.
“Based on the members’ opinion we are taking this resolution… This is the happiest moment for AIADMK. We are very happy to face the upcoming elections whether it might be Parliament or Assembly elections,” she said.

Meanwhile, in a video released by news agency ANI, BJP leader K Annamalai was seen refusing to comment on this development.

The future of the alliance between both parties seemed shaky for the past few months with BJP Tamil Nadu chief K Annamalai frequently making comments against the AIADMK and the BJP national leadership also appearing lenient towards him.
Only two weeks ago, Annamalai had stirred a controversy by passing remarks about Dravidian stalwart C N Annadurai, Referencing a 1956 speech by Annadurai that critiqued the Hindu faith, Annamalai sought to make a point that freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar condemned Annadurai.
Meanwhile, in response to Annamalai’s remarks, AIADMK’s spokesperson D Jayakumar had said last Monday that the BJP was no longer in an alliance with his party.
Jayakumar had also said that the BJP leader was “a little fox howling at the AIADMK, a gang of lions”.
