Beware! People with these health issues should avoid eating papaya

While papaya has many benefits, it can adversely affect people suffering from certain medical conditions

Papaya is a nutritious fruit rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber. It has many health benefits – aiding digestion, weight loss and controlling diabetes. But papaya may prove harmful for those with certain medical conditions.

People suffering from kidney diseases or kidney stones should avoid eating papaya. It contains vitamin C and antioxidants which may increase oxalate levels and aggravate kidney stones.

Those with irregular heartbeat should also not eat papaya. It contains cyanogenic glycosides which are similar to amino acids that may disrupt normal heart rhythm.

Pregnant women must avoid eating raw papaya, especially the latex/skin, as it contains papain which can induce contractions. This raises the risk of premature delivery.

People allergic to chitinous latex should also refrain from papaya due to chances of cross reaction leading to breathing issues.

In addition, papaya may cause a sudden spike and drop in blood sugar levels. So people with hypoglycemia or diabetes must be careful while eating it.

While papaya is very healthy for most people, those with the above conditions should consult a doctor before adding it to their diet. Understanding what foods aggravate medical problems can help manage health conditions better. Awareness about papaya’s adverse effects can prevent complications in vulnerable groups.
