Karnataka HC Chief Justice takes oath, SC gets third judge from SC community

Justice Prasanna Varale Becomes SC Judge, 3rd from SC Community on Bench

Justice Prasanna B Varale, Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, was appointed as a Supreme Court judge on January 25. He took oath administered by CJI DY Chandrachud in Delhi.

With this, Justice Varale becomes one of three Supreme Court judges belonging to the Scheduled Caste community. The other SC judges in the apex court are Justices BR Gavai and CT Ravikumar.

Justice Varale’s appointment takes the Supreme Court’s strength to 34 judges, including the CJI. The vacancy arose after Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul retired on December 25 last year.

The Ministry of Law and Justice had notified Justice Varale’s appointment on January 24 based on the recommendation of the SC collegium.

Born in 1962 in Karnataka, Justice Prasanna B Varale started his law practice in 1985 after graduating in Arts and Law. He was appointed as an Additional Judge in the Bombay HC in July 2008 and later elevated as a permanent judge.

Justice Varale served a 14-year tenure in the Bombay High Court before becoming the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court in October 2022. He is credited for passing landmark judgments on various issues during his stint.

Justice Varale has stated his legal career was inspired by the iconic Dr BR Ambedkar’s influence on his family. His appointment is a significant moment with the SC getting three judges from the SC community for the first time.
