Shaheen’s Surprise Captaincy Leaves Afridi Sr. Amused

Veteran all-rounder pokes fun at son-in-law's accidental rise to T20I leadership role

Legendary all-rounder Shahid Afridi raised eyebrows with a humorous take on the recent appointment of his son-in-law Shaheen Afridi as Pakistan’s T20I captain.“I wanted to see [Mohammad] Rizwan as the T20 captain, but Shaheen became the skipper by mistake,” quipped Afridi at a recent event attended by the players.

Afridi heaped praise on Rizwan’s work ethic and focus, saying he admires the veteran wicketkeeper-batter’s ability to block out distractions and give his all. With Babar Azam sacked after Pakistan’s disastrous World Cup campaign, the Pakistan Cricket Board shook things up by naming the 22-year-old Shaheen as skipper for the upcoming home T20I series against New Zealand.

The five-match series starts January 12 as the team begins rebuilding for October’s T20 World Cup in West Indies.Shaheen, who sat bemused as his father-in-law cracked jokes, will hope his surprise elevation to the top job ushers in a new era of success for Pakistan’s talented but inconsistent T20 squad.
