The age norm for class 1 admissions will be enforced in Karnataka only from 2025 onwards

ON THURSDAY, BC Nagesh, the Karnataka School Education Minister, clarified that the age limit policy of six years as the standard for enrolling children in class 1 will only be implemented after two academic years, from 2025-2026.

Most parents who enrolled their children in LKG and UKG at an early age were concerned that their child would lose a year if they did not reach six years of age by the time they entered class 1.

It is not necessary for parents who have already enrolled their children to worry about their children not meeting the age requirement of six years old. We will allow the children to be promoted to class 1 during the current academic year, 2023-24 and 2024-25. According to education experts, it is not appropriate to apply academic pressure to students under six years of age. As a result, children aged 5 and 6 have a wide range of intellectual abilities,” the minister explained.

In accordance with the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, Karnataka set the age norm in July.

According to Nagesh, the policy has already been implemented in 23 Indian states.

During July, the Karnataka Education Department mandated a minimum age limit of six years for admission to class 1 in Karnataka schools as of June 1. At present, the age limit is five years and five months. According to the commissioner of public instruction, the new rule is applicable to prospective students.

In the opinion of an officer with the education department, children under five years of age may not be able to comprehend concepts presented in class 1. As a result, the child will be stressed out, and it will have an adverse effect on their psychological well-being. Each age category is trained to perform a specific activity during a child’s life. As early as five years old, it will not be appropriate to snatch away early childhood care and nurturing activities and pressure them with academics,” the officer explained.
