People are sending their condolences after the death of former Gujarat governor Om Prakash Kohli.

Former Gujarat governor and longtime Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician Om Prakash Kohli passed away on Monday. He was 87.

Kohli was a former Rajya Sabha member and former head of the BJP in Delhi. He was also a scholar. He taught Hindi at the Hansraj College and Deshbandhu College of Delhi University for almost three decades.

His granddaughter, Karnika Kohli, conveyed the news of his passing. My grandpa, former Gujarat governor and Raja Sabha representative Shri Om Prakash Kohli, has gone away. Tomorrow at 11:30 am, his funeral will be held at Nigambodh Ghat in New Delhi,” she tweeted.

Kohli served as the nineteenth governor of Gujarat between 2014 and 2019. Moreover, he was the governor of Madhya Pradesh and Goa.

“Deeply saddened by the loss of Shri OP Kohli Ji. He was instrumental in bolstering our Party in Delhi. As a representative and governor, he prioritised concerns of public welfare. He was extremely enthusiastic in the education industry. My prayers go out to his family. Oh Shanti,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The chief minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, also expressed his condolences. “Condolences on the death of former Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohliji. His contributions to the field of education will always be recognised, as will his easygoing nature. May God rest his soul and provide his family the fortitude to face this loss. Om Shanti!” was his tweet.

Many leaders of the BJP resorted to social media to express their sorrow.

“Throughout his lengthy public career, Shri OP Kohli ji gained a great deal of esteem for his competence and scholarship. He served as the Governor of Gujarat and was instrumental in bolstering the BJP in Delhi. I am profoundly grieved by his passing. “May God grant his family strength,” tweeted Defense Minister Rajnath Singh.

Kohli retired as a reader from Delhi University in 1994. He was a student leader and the India president of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member and the BJP’s ideological guru. Kohli was imprisoned throughout the Emergency.

“He has committed his life to ideas and organisation as an activist. He contributes significantly to building the party and the organisation. In addition to being an educator and politician, Kohli ji was also a talented writer. May God grant peace to the soul of the deceased and strength to the family members. Oh Shanti,” tweeted transport minister Nitin Gadkari.

Kohli served in the Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2000 and, among other committee affiliations, chaired the parliamentary housing committee.
