Cattle transportation ban lifted after lumpy skin disease is under control

On Saturday, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation informed the Gujarat High Court that Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) has been “contained” within the city limits and in the state, and that the prohibition order against transportation of cattle has therefore been lifted.

The AMC has filed an affidavit dated October 15 via Vishal Khanama, its deputy municipal commissioner in charge of cattle nuisance control (CNCD), regarding a contempt petition regarding stray cattle.

AMC has lifted the prohibition order, according to the affidavit, so that impounded stray cattle are now being transported to different panjrapoles (animal shelters) by authorised agencies in various parts of the city. Consequently, the pressure on the AMC cattle pound will be reduced, allowing for more space for impounded cattle to be kept at the castle pounds of AMC.

The work on the construction of two new temporary cattle sheds is also at an advanced stage, according to the report.

In addition, AMC has indicated that it will provide ex-gratia relief of Rs 2 lakh to the kin of Bhavin Patel, who died after being injured by a stray cattle.

AMC reports that between August 24 and October 14, it has captured a total of 4,181 cattle, RFID-tagged 4,838 cattle, registered 251 FIRs against stray cattle owners, and seized over 17,000 kilograms of grass feed.

On October 17, the Gujarat High Court will hear the petition before a division bench.
