Driving License Renewals Set To Go Online For Added Convenience

Proposed digital process aims to eliminate trips to RTO offices

Getting a driving license renewal is set to become more convenient thanks to a proposed online facility.

Until now, drivers had to physically visit Regional Transport Office (RTO) branches and stand in long queues to renew licenses. But a new initiative aims to digitize the renewal process, potentially eliminating trips to RTO offices.

As per the proposal, license holders would be able to renew licenses from the comfort of their homes by uploading documents and paying fees digitally. This would significantly ease the cumbersome renewal process.

While some states already provide online renewal services, the facility is likely to be extended across India once approved. This would benefit individuals living away from hometown RTOs.

The digital route for renewals aligns with the government’s Digital India campaign focused on taking services online for greater ease and transparency. Driving license renewal is the next in line to transition to a paperless process.

The online renewal system would especially assist drivers who are unable to take time off work frequently to visit RTO offices. By reducing the need for physical visits, the proposed policy aims to make license renewals hassle-free for citizens.
